Medeski, Martin & Wood – Let’s Go Everywhere

I knew nothing about this new MMW album before picking it up. All I saw was a psychadelic, colorful drawing with giant, wavy eared rabbits. I expected an adventurous, fuzzed-out, lengthy soul-jazz epic. Turned out to be an album they made for children. It’s not bad. Just wasn’t what I was expecting.

Either way, I’m in love with the album art. The illustration was done by Jim Stoten (art direction by Graphic Therapy) who seems to have done a few other album covers. I’ve never seen his work before but his portfolio is filled with exactly the style of art that I love. My favorite part of the cover (besides the rabbits) are the caricatures of MMW in the balloon. Billy Martin looks like a sasquatch.

The Roots – Rising Down

This is the recently released cover for the new Roots album coming in April. It’s an interesting choice. The Nah Right post got an explanation from ?uestlove.

This drawing is entitled NEGRO RULE. and it pretty much sums up the feeling of the Confederate Union towards the newly freed slaves and the idea that if given power they would reek havoc and chaos on the country.

I’m not sure who the artist is. It may be an older piece. Pretty cool, I think.

MF Doom – Mm..Food

I’m surprised I haven’t made a post about MF Doom’s last solo album. The artwork was done by Jason Jagel, an artist in California who’s done a few album covers. According to a message from Jeff Jank (the designer) Jagel was the son of John Jagel who designed the cover of Ornette Coleman’s Ornette! that I mentioned earlier.

Jeff also mentioned a cover he did for a Dudley Perkins single that I wasn’t aware of. The painting is amazing.

Herbie Hancock – Headhunters

Headhunters is quite honestly one of my favorite albums. But I never really questioned the ridiculous cover art. Pointy font, posterized photos, Herbie wearing an electronic African mask thing… I just knew it was something crazy when I pulled double copies out of my parent’s record collection. The design work is done by Victor Moscoso, a psychadelic poster/comic artist who appears to still be doing work.

Erykah Badu – New Amerykah Pt. 1

I didn’t realize how soon this album was being released until today. Madlib, Georgia Anne Muldrow, 9th Wonder and Dilla are on production. How can Erykah go wrong? What I really wanted to post about was the music video for “Honey”. Check out the album covers, inside jokes and random guest spots, including Sa-Ra and… Daedelus??

Ahmad Jamal – Outertimeinnerspace

Artwork and design by Terry Lamb, who apparently did a lot of Camel Cigarette ads in his time.

Clark – Body Riddle

Artwork by Universal Everything (according to Discogs. I’m getting the album in a few days so I can confirm.)

Also, a wild video for the track “Ted”, done by 1stAveMachine. Hope you like bugs!
